Transitioning to Small Town America

Excerpt from my curators statement; July 5th, 2025:

The purpose of “Transitioning to Small Town America” is to give transgender youth in the rural Catskill Mountain area the opportunity to express themselves in a place that tries to make them disappear. Small towns,
behind the benefits of tight-knit, home-grown communities, tend to smother anything that is different, and trans people’s existences tend to be ignored, discouraged, or just flat out denied.

This is especially true for young trans people, who often hear the phrases “you’re too young to know yourself,” “it’s just a phase,” or the like. This is a place for trans youth to say “I exist, and I’m not going anywhere,” and a
place for them to express themselves through their art. This show combines many different mediums, all chosen individually by the group of artists in the exhibition. The exhibition includes painting, photography, fashion,
and writing, all related back to the common theme of the transgender experience.
